ABOUT
One of the first meetings of its kind, the Mind Science Foundation will convene an international meeting in collaboration with MSF Chief Scientific Advisor, Dr. David Eagleman.
We made a strategic decision to convene the meeting in San Antonio in order to showcase the city's burgeoning tech sector, and its deep roots in biomedical research. We believe it is essential that the profound impact of emerging technologies as they expand the human mind be explored in a thoughtful, intentional manner.
Keynote Speaker
DAVID EAGLEMAN, PH.D.
DAVID EAGLEMAN, PH.D.
Mind Science Foundation’s Chief Science Advisor, David Eagleman, teaches at Stanford
University and heads the Center for Science and Law. He is best known for his work on sensory substitution, time perception, brain plasticity, synesthesia, and neurolaw. Dr. Eagleman will lead the session on technologies of sensory and perceptual enhancement.
CHRISTOF KOCH, PH.D.
Dr. Koch has published extensively, and his writings and interests integrate theoretical, computational and experimental neuroscience. His most recent book, Consciousness: Confessions of a Romantic Reductionist, blends science and memoir to explore topics in discovering the roots of consciousness. Stemming in part from a long-standing collaboration with the late Nobel Laureate Francis Crick, Koch authored the book The Quest for Consciousness: A Neurobiological Approach. He will lead a session on the brain and consciousness.
GIULIO TONONI, M.D., PH.D.
Giulio Tononi received his medical degree from the University of Pisa, Italy, where he specialized in Psychiatry. After serving as a medical officer in the Army, he obtained a Ph.D. in neuroscience as a fellow of the Scuola Superiore for his work on sleep regulation. He is currently Professor of Psychiatry, Distinguished Professor in Consciousness Science, Chair in Sleep Medicine at the U of Wisconsin–Madison, and the Director of the Wisconsin Institute for Sleep and Consciousness. His laboratory studies consciousness and developed the integrated information theory.
ERICA WARP, PH.D.
Erica Warp is the Vice President of Product at EMOTIV, a bioinformatics company advancing our understanding of the human mind using brain wearables and big data. She was the founder and CEO of Kizoom, an award winning developer of educational games for kids about the brain and growth mindset, and is the creator of Ned the Neuron. She has a PhD in Neuroscience from UC Berkeley, as well as a Masters in Neuroscience from the University of London and a degree in Biology from Brown University. Prior to her graduate work, she co-founded the artist-run gallery space The Surgery in London and created work at the intersection of science, art and technology.
MORAN CERF, PH.D.
Dr. Cerf is a professor of neuroscience and business at the Kellogg School of Management. Additionally, he is a visiting faculty the MIT Media Lab, and the Alfred P. Sloan screenwriting Professor at the American Film Institute. Prior to his academic career, Cerf worked as a hacker for nearly a decade, which led him to later pursue non-traditional ways to investigate the brain. Notably, he has been working with patients undergoing brain-surgery where he studies behavior, emotion, decision making and dreams.
MELANIE BOLY, M.D., PH.D.
Dr. Boly is a neurologist and neuroscientist. She has worked more than 15 years in the field of altered states of consciousness such as vegetative state, sleep and anesthesia, with colleagues like Steven Laureys, Pierre Maquet, Adrian Owen and Karl Friston. Her research aims at combining neuroimaging techniques such as PET, functional MRI, TMS-EEG, and high density EEG to a theoretical framework, hoping to uncover the neural mechanisms of the level and contents of consciousness in healthy subjects and neurological patients.
ALEX HUTH, PH.D.
Alex Huth is currently a new faculty member at UT Austin and was previously a neuroscience postdoc in Dr. Jack Gallant's laboratory at UC Berkeley. He does work in computational and experimental neuroscience using fMRI. His research is focused on how the many different areas in the human brain work together to perform complex tasks such as understanding natural language. He uses fMRI to measure brain responses while subjects do real-life tasks, such as listening to a story, and then uses those data to build computational models of how the brain functions. Alex was awarded a Burroughs Wellcome Career Award in 2016, which will support his research at UT.
